Tilman Pass trek is challenging and considered one of the most difficult passes in Nepal’s Langtang region. Tilman pass trek connects the popular Langtang Valley to the less-visited region of Panch Pokhari in the south.
This physically demanding rugged trail takes you over Tilman Pass at an altitude of 5,300 meters above sea level. The trek is the best choice for those who love remote, untouched nature and wilderness adventure.
This trek is named after a British explorer and mountaineer Bill Tilman who spent 4 months in 1949 trekking this trail to Langtang and Ganesh Himal for exploratory and scientific purposes.
The Tilman pass goes between mount Ganchenpo (6,387m.) and mount Urkinmang (6,151m.). This quiet, serene, and remote trek offers a commanding view of snow-capped mountains which includes Dorje Lakpa (6,966m.), Phurbi Chyachu (6,637m.), Madiya (6,257m.), Langshisha (6,427m.), Langtang Lirung (7,227 m.), and many more.
Getting to the trailhead of Tilman pass trek
There is no nearby airfield where you can take flight for this trek which makes it quicker. So we only reach the trailhead by road. The journey begins with a drive from Kathmandu through the scenic mid-hill region after then to Trisuli Bazaar and along the Trisuli and Bhote Koshi rivers to Syabru Beshi.
Another gateway option for this trek is to start from Melamchi Bazaar and trek to Panch Pokhari and onwards to the pass is in the wilderness for a few days before getting into Langtang valley.
Tilman pass trek route
The trek starts from Syabru Beshi crossing Bhote Koshi river on the suspension bridge then it goes along the Langtang Khola through the beautiful forest to the lama hotel via Pairo and Bamboo. Then the trail goes through a dense forest to Ghoda Tabela and through the tundra climate region of Kyanjin Gompa via the famous Langtang village.
After two days of preparation for acclimatization by hiking on viewpoints like Kyanjin Ri or Tsergo Ri, the trail goes towards the Langshisa Kharka and to Moraine camp gradually to get ready for the pass. Then traversing on loose rocks, the tricky part of the glacier trek takes you over the Tilman pass and then downhill to the base camp for the night.
After walking through forests and rugged terrain, you will then arrive at Panch Pokhari after spending the previous night at Tinpokhari. The walk continues descending down to Tupi Danda, Dhap, and finally at Melamchi bazaar to finish the trek.
Required Permits and fees for Tilman pass trek
You need to have two types of permits to do the Tilman pass trek which are the "Langtang national park entrance fee" as our trek goes through the national park which costs 3000 rupees per person and the "TIMS card"(trekking information management system) cost $10 USD per person for organized trekkers and $20 USD for independent trekkers per person.
Safety measures for Tilman pass trek
As Tilman passes, the trek goes through remote regions of Langtang and Panch Pokhari where there is not any shelter and food available for a few days. So, we need to be sufficient with all the supplies and tents.
As well as there are not any precise paths like other popular trekking trails to go and also come across landslides, scree slopes, and glaciers you need someone with experience to do this trek. As well as you need to be well-equipped with all warm trekking gears and crampon-like spikes for walking on the glacier.
