Add - on trail to Tsum Valley & Ganesh Himal Trek 

Tsum Valley and Ganesh Himal Base Camp Trek both falls under the Manaslu Region, a vast region that borders with China (Tibet). Trekkers will also have an opportunity to explore the Tibetan border during the trek.

This sensitivity of the region has made the Manaslu a special and restricted region for foreign trekkers. Despite being a vast region, Manaslu is also a least populates region and has only 3 trekking routes open for trekkers.

Those includes:

  1. Tsum Valley Trek
  2. Ganesh Himal Base Camp Trek
  3. Manaslu Circuit Trek

Here, trekkers will have an option to choose the entire 3 routes in a one go or they can combine one with the other or they can just go with the one. This depends upon the trekker’s flexibility with the time-frame and interest.

Further, trekkers can also join the Annapurna Circuit Trek with Tsum Valley and Manaslu Circuit Trek, as the descend point of the Manaslu Circuit Trek is also the starting point of the Annapurna Circuit Trek and hence, you can include Tsum Valley with Manaslu and Annapurna Circuit Combo Trek.

Tsum Valley and Manaslu Circuit Trek

Tsum Valley and Manaslu Circuit Trek both falls under Manaslu Region and a separate restricted areas and here trekkers will need to have two separate special (Restricted) permits along with other regular permits.

The trail to Tsum Valley and Manaslu Circuit Treks follows the same for couple of starting days and then the trail diverts to Tsum Valley and Ganesh Himal Base Camp Route from Lokpa after Jagat.

Tsum Valley Trek routes follows all the way to Mu Gompa and then follows the same route to descend to Lokpa. Here, trekkers who wants to commerce the route towards Manaslu Circuit Trek can head forward from Lokpa to Deng and follow the Manaslu Circuit Trek route to descend towards Dharapani.

Further, if one wants to join Annapurna Circuit Trail with the Manaslu Circuit Trek, that too will be possible from Dharapani. If this case, you can follow Manaslu and Annapurna Circuit Combo Trek Itinerary.

Who Can Trek Tsum Valley and Ganesh Hmal Base Camp? 

Trekkers who can hike for 5/6 hours per day (Unless you prefer to customized) can hike Tsum Valley and Ganesh Himal Base Camp Trek easily. For this trek, prior experience or high-altitude expertise are not required.

Tsum valley and Ganesh Himal Base Camp Trek both falls under moderate and low-altitude category. The best part of this hike is its easy-going trail and low-altitude camp. The highest altitude one will spend a night at the tea house will be MU GOMPA (3700M), however, the highest altitude one will step in will be GANESH HIMAL BASE CAMP (4200M) and this will be a DAY HIKE from Gomba Lungdang (3200M).

Further, for trekkers, the entire Tsum Valley and Ganesh Himal Trek will be Tea House accommodation and the program can be customized as per your need and time-frame. Apart from this, individual trekkers can also trek the Tsum Valley and Ganesh Himal without group joining, as the government has recently lifted the mandatory regulation of at least two trekkers to obtain the permits for any restricted area trek in Nepal.

Overall, any trekkers without prior experience, children or senior citizen who want to explore the sacred valley of Tsum and wants to avoid crowd can easily trek Tsum Valley and Ganesh Himal.

Day 1:Drive to Maccha Khola -(930m/3051 ft): 160km, 7/8 hours drive

The first day of the trek begins from Kathmandu all the way to Maccha Khola, which is the starting point to the entire Manaslu Region trek. This will be a bus ride or with an option of private jeep ride to Maccha Khola or Jagat.

This drive provides majestic views of the hills, Himalayas, rivers and local villages during the ride.

Day 2:Trek from Machha Khola to Jagat - (1,340 m/4,396 ft): 23 km / hiking 6/7 hours

The experience of real hike begins today with stunning views, trek continues relatively easy route followed by Tatopani, a natural hot spring to stop for a short break. Then continue a steep climb at Dobhan and then drop down towards the Yaru Khola, a seasonal stream.

As the hike continues you will make couple of climbs to reach Jagat, a small village on the bank of the river Budhi Gandaki.

Day 3:Trek from Jagat to Lokpa - (2,240 m / 7,349 ft):15 km, 6/7 hours walking

The trek from Jagat enters the Restricted Area and continues through the sandy bank. As the hike continues to the end of the bank, the trail gets steep, followed by a Suspension bridge over a river to cross.

Now, the climb continues until we reach a small but beautiful Philim Village for a short break. Here, we skip the trail to Manaslu Circuit Trek and divert towards the Tsum Valley to reach Lokpa village, a stunning view of the Ganesh Himal and Shringi Himal welcomes us.

Day 4:Trek from Lokpa to Chumling - (2,386 m/7,828 ft): 6.3 km, 3/4 hours walking

With continue ascent and crossing the suspension bridges, you will enjoy a pristine hike. The day mainly goes with ascent with few trekkers and the end part continues with a descent gradual nice hike to reach Chumling village.

Day 5:Trek From Chumling to Chhokang Paro (3,031 m/9,944 ft): 14km. 5/6 hours walking

Relatively majestic day for the hike, continues with tributaries of the Bhudi Gandaki River throughout the day. Passing a monastery, chorten and mani walls, we ascent towards Chhokang Paro, a popular and big village of the Tsum Valley, with majestic view of Mount Himchuli and Ganesh Himal.

Day 6:Trek from Chhokang Paro to Mu Gompa (3,700 m/12,139 ft): 14km, 6/7 hours walking

The most awaited day of the trek, starts with an excitement. Today we will continue our hike, explore multiple villages of Tibetan origin and explore the tradition and custom of them. Our hike passes by Leru, Ngakyu and Lamagaun, and then we will visit Milarepa Cave, one of the popular pilgrimage destinations of Tibetan Buddhist followers.

Now the trail continues through the riverbed, exploring couple of more settlement at the Lar, Phurbe, Pangdun, and then the Nile village. Our hike now skips the riverbed to make a narrow climb through the valley and finally a steep climb to reach our highest point of the Tsum Valley at Mu Gompa to end our trek.

Day 7:Back to Chhokang Paro(3,031 m/9,944 ft): 14km: 6/7 hours walking

Our day starts with descend bidding farewell of Mu Gompa. The hike mostly follows the same route to descend Chhokang Paro, however, we will stop couple of the villages on the day to explore which we have missed previous day.

Day 8:Trek From Chhokang Paro to Gomba Lungdang (3,200 m/10,498 ft): 13km, 5/6 hours walking

Easy day for us, our trek descends with alternative route to follow our next destination to reach Ganesh Himal Base Camp (4200M). The first part of the hike will be downhill through the pine forest followed by rocky trail to reach Domche for our lunch break.

As the hike continues, we follow the steep climb uphill with scenic view to reach Gomba Lungdang. Here, we will visit monastery and nunnery where girls and women are in charge of the monastery.

Day 9:Day Tour to Ganesh Himal Base Camp (4,200 m/13,780 ft) & Back to Gomba Lundang: 10 km, 5 /6 hours walking

Great day to explore Ganesh Himal Base Camp (4200M). Our hike passes by Pine Forest and grassland, followed by stone hut and Yak huts, mainly used for seasonal grazing of herds of the locals.

Our hike of the days will almost be steep climb of 1000 meters to reach the Base Camp. We pass by the Torogumba glacier and reach the Ganesh Himal Base Camp with majestic Himalayan vista around.

After exploring the Base Camp, our hike continues to descent downhill towards Gomba Lungdang for our overnight stay.

Day 10:Trek to Lokpa Via Ripchet Village - 16km, 6/7 hours walking

We start descending towards our destination through the alpine and rhododendron forest, with an alternative trail through Ripchet followed by the hydropower trail to reach Lokpa, the last point of the Tsum Valley trail.

The trail to Jagat will be the same route which we did followed while entering into Tsum Valley. We pass by Ekle Bhatti and Phillim and descend towards Jagat for our overnight stay.

However, for treekers who want to continue their trek to Manaslu Circuit, they can hike from Lokpa to Deng or Namrung to combine Tsum Valley / Ganesh Himal and Manaslu Circuit in just a one go.

Day 12:Trek to Maccha Khola (9,30 m/3,051 ft) 13.7 km, 5/6 hours walking

Monasteries one can visit during the Tsum Valley and Ganesh Himal Trek 

Tsum Valley is famous for its unique culture, tradition and religious practice in Nepal. Majority of the people of the Tsum Valley are descendent from Tibet before/after China invaded Tibet and they follow Tibetan Buddhism as their main religion.

They have been preserving their age-old culture, tradition and religious practice. There are numerous monastery and cave that are very popular pilgrimage destination in the Tsum Valley. Buddhist Saint Guru Milarepa was one that did his meditation in the cave of Tsum Valley and hence the area is regarded as one of the sacred valleys by the Tibetan Buddhist followers.

The most popular monastery in the entire Tsum Valley is the Mu Gompa which is the largest and also the highest situated monastery at 3700 Meters. Rachen Gompa is yet another popular Nunnery Monastery that houses Buddhist nun providing training about religious practice.

Gomba Lungdang is yet another popular monastery that lies beneath the Ganesh Himal and is famous for practicing meditation and religious celebration. Apart from this, there are other numerous monasteries and gompa that are popular and are built in the villages of the Tsum Valley.

Tsum Valley and Ganesh Himal Base Camp is comparatively easy going and low altitude trek of the entire Manaslu Region. The best part of this trek route is its solitude and peaceful trail. There will be few trekkers in this trail and hence it is crowd-free route.

Tsum Valley and Ganesh Himal Base Camp Trek is a remote and off-the-beaten trail, however, trekkers will be staying in a tea house and home stay accommodation operated by the locals.

The trek to Tsum Valley and Ganesh Himal follows the well-maintained trail and passes by the conserved forest, villages, farmland and the majestic view throughout. The trail crosses seasonal river in a peaceful environment.

Tsum Valley and Ganesh Himal Base Camp Trek mainly focus the majestic views, peaceful trail, diverse vegetation and the unique Tibetan culture and hospitality where trekkers will be able to visit popular monasteries.

The starting and the ending point of the Tsum Valley and Ganesh Himal Base Camp Trek remains the same which is Maccha Khola / Jagat because there are no other alternative route to end the trek unless one prefers to joint the Manaslu Circuit Trek with the Tsum Valley Trail.

Best time for Tsum Valley and Ganesh Himal Base Camp Trek 

Trekking in Nepal is possible throughout the year, however, Tsum Valley is a low altitude trek and, thus, there are specific months and season that is regarded as the best time for Tsum Valley and Ganesh Himal Trek.

When we trek certain areas, we expect different aspect and the majestic views during the hike. Thus, to get those, we have to be very precise with the months and season for this hike.

Due to global warming and changes in the sift of weather pattern, the worst time in Nepal for trekkers are regarded as the monsoon when it comes to low-altitude trek. And further, the shift of Monsoon is changing.

Thus, to avoid the worst time of Monsoon, trekking to Tsum Valley and Ganesh Himal Base Camp can perfectly be done during the Spring, Autumn and Winter and the months like January – June and October (2nd Week) till December is the best time of the year. This time of the year provides pristine environment, great view and relax hiking trail.

Starting and ending point of Tsum Valley and Ganesh Himal Trek 

Tsum Valley and Ganesh Himal Base Camp Trek which lies in the Manaslu Region, starts and ends at the same point, unless you want to add the trail to Manaslu Circuit Trek.

Here, if one wants to continue the combo Tsum Valley and/or Ganesh Himal Base Camp Trek, then you have to follow the only one route available for this trek and this goes via Maccha Khola, a gate-way to entire Manaslu Region.

Maccha Khola is a point where trekkers can reach via Bus or Jeep from Kathmandu and then the trek enters into Lokpa via Jagat. Till Philim, almost half way from Jagat, the trail head to Manaslu Circuit and Tsum Valley and Ganesh Himal remains the same.

Finally, your trek enters into Lokpa the gate-way to Tsum Valley and then continues into Mu Gompa and then you descend half way the same trail and then the route diverts towards Ganesh Himal trek.

Exploring the Ganesh Himal your trek descends towards Lokpa, the gate-way to Tsum Valley via an alternative Hydropower trail and then continues descending towards Maccha Khola via Jagat. Here, for Tsum Valley and Ganesh Himal Trek, the starting and ending point of the trail for couple of starting days and the last couple of ending days remain the same which is Maccha Khola

However, for trekkers, who wants to extend their trail towards Manaslu Circuit, they can ascend towards Manaslu Trail from Lokpa.

Required permits for Tsum Valley and Ganesh Himal Base Camp Trek 

Tsum Valley and Ganesh Himal both falls under the Manaslu Conservation Area Project of the Manaslu Region. Apart from this, those areas of the trail also are declared as a Restricted Area and trekkers need to follow strict guidelines to trek in this route.

Further, the route of the Tsum Valley and Ganesh Himal are guided by the independent Village Development Committee (VDC) as a local body and they have the right to collect independent individual local tax, as a local permits.

Due to this, trekkers in the Tsum Valley and Ganesh Himal Base Camp trail are to follow with some of the permits:

  • Manaslu Conservation Area Project PERMIT (MCAP)
  • Restricted Area Permits (RAP) of Tsum Valley
  • Chumnubri Rural Municipality Permit

Food and Accommodation during the Tsum Valley and Ganesh Himal Trek 

The option of food and accommodation during Tsum Valley Trek is perfect. Here, trekkers will be staying in a basic tea house and home stay during the entire trek. All the tea house and home stay are run by local people and trekkers will have an opportunity to explore their tradition and culture, and enjoy their hospitality.

Food goes will multiple option, as the tea house and home stay will have a menu card and trekkers will have an option to choose their food from the menu. Foods are hygienic and fresh and vegetable used are local grown.

Transportation during the Tsum Valley and Ganesh Himal Trek 

Tsum Valley and Ganesh Himal Base Camp Trek falls under the Manaslu Region and the gate-way to the trail head is Maccha Khola. Trekkers can drive from Kathmandu to Maccha Khola via a Local Bus and after the trek local bus will be available for drive to Kathmandu.

However, if one prefers to take a private Jeep then one can drive all the way to Jagat on the same day. Here, one need to know that, local bus only operates till Maccha Khola, but a private Jeep will reach till Jagat. This will minimize two days in the entire program if trekkers prefer to go with a private jeep option. However, private jeep from Maccha Khola to Jagat only runs during the dry season, as this is off-road drive.

Tsum Valley and Ganesh Himal Trek Cost 

Tsum Valley and Ganesh Himal Base Camp is a budget-friendly trek and is comparatively affordable in compare to Everest Base Camp Trek. The cost of the Tsum Valley and Ganesh Himal Base Camp is mainly determined by different factors, such as the number of day, number of trekkers and the means of transport one prefers to use during the trek to reach and to descend from the trailhead (Public transport / Private transport).

Overall, one can assume the trek cost for Tsum Valley and Ganesh Himal Base Camp Trek will roughly go from USD 1200 to USD 1500 depending upon the number of travelers and the services one prefers to take.
