    Useful Info

Best Season for the Annapurna base camp trek

Spring and Autumn are the best seasons to travel in the Himalayas of Nepal, so is for Annapurna base camp. March to May is the spring season in Nepal so, during this season sky stays clear which provides an opportunity for good mountain views as well as during this season tree blossom such as rhododendron comes out which adds up beauty to the surrounding scenery.

September to November is the Autumn season in Nepal and even during this season sky remains clear with the deep blue sky which also provides a good view of the mountains. During this season, the climate and temperature remain temperate which is not so sweaty while trekking.

Above all, with a clear blue sky and a high range of Himalayan visibility, the Annapurna Base Camp trail will be easy to hike along with less snow to create any disturbance.

    Annapurna base camp trek route

There are different routes to Annapurna base camp, this can be arranged according to your holiday duration which is a time limit. There are a few starting points for the Annapurna base camp in which Nayapul is the most common.

Trekkers who want to do a little longer and explore another majestic part of the Annapurna region can start at Nayapul, Ghorepani, Tadapani, Chhomrong, Himalaya hotel, and to Annapurna base camp.

Trekkers with the short-time holidays can start from Nayapul and go straight through Jhinu Danda, Chhomrong, Himalaya, and to Annapurna base camp.

Moreover, there are other few options as well, this can be a couple of days longer but touching all the beautiful areas of the Annapurna region.

Annapurna base camp Permits and fees

Trekkers need two different permits for Annapurna Base Camp Trek, as the region is a conservation area; they are Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) entrance permit, which costs Rs 3000, and the other permit is called "TIMS CARD" (Trekking Information Management System) which costs Rs 2000.

These two permits are applicable in all the Annapurna region of Nepal and can be used once at the time of entry until you have completed the trek. So, trekkers need to fill the areas they are supposed to enter in the Annapurna region. The permits are non-transferable and cannot be re-used again.

    Accommodation during the high season.

Accommodation in Annapurna base camp trail is similar compared to other trekking region of Nepal, the most common is tea-house and lodge accommodation which is a room with a minimum of two beds but toilets and bathroom are outside the room.

During high season in this trek, you might have to share rooms with other trekkers as after Chhomrong there is a limited number of lodges in every place we stop for the night. So, you need to be prepared for that if you are doing teahouse trekking to Annapurna base camp.

Apart from this Annapurna region is one of the most popular regions as well with numerous different tea-houses and lodges, to speak the truth in terms of accommodation Annapurna region is far better than the other region of Nepal. Only the reason for the limited number of tea houses in high altitudes is due to conservation projects.

As the government restricts the unlawful competition of concrete construction of buildings to maintain the beauty of the region. This is mainly applicable where the altitude goes above 3000 meters.

    Short Keys to Know:-

    • Over -20-degree sleep bag and proper down jacket would be useful
    • Be sufficient with all the things that you need as you might not find them in the mountain while trekking.
    • You can refill your water bottle with cold water but you have to treat it with iodine pills or drops make sure you bring enough pills.
    • If you choose to buy bottled water that costs from 100 to 400 rupees depending on a high elevation so make sure you figure out your budget.
    • Most equipment you can buy or rent before the trek.
    • Take enough extra money in Nepal currency as the dollar devalues in the mountain.
    • WIFI, hot shower, and battery charging services are available if you pay.
    • In case you can’t walk there is a pony ride or helicopter service at your request.

Teju and Chandra looked after me incredibly well

I booked a four-day trek with Discover Altitude but due to altitude sickness could only complete three days of it. The trip went ahead despite my being the only participant, which I really appreciated. Teju was an amazingly friendly and helpful guide and even carried my daypack for me as I was feeling faint. He also kindly rearranged the trip so I could cut it short and return to Pokhara early. Chandra was also a very helpful and friendly porter. Be warned that the hotel in Ghandruk is freezing so bring your own superwarm sleeping bag and hot water bottle like I did (nice and cosy wood fire in the lounge however!) Really appreciated the company being so flexible and helpful when I didn't feel well enough to do the four days - everyone is affected by altitude differently and I was sadly someone who couldn't handle it.

Your search for a trekking company can stop here!

I can’t say enough great things about Kumar and Santosh at Discover Altitude. They set my trip up with minimal notice, even made some custom changes and everything went perfectly. They have great connections for everything tourism in Nepal. If you want a guide to show you around Kathmandu-they’ve got you. If you want to go for a trek-it’s their bread and butter. If you want to go for an expedition at half the cost of western companies with guides whose experience will blow your mind-easy day. Whether you’re planning a trip for next year or next week they will take care of you like family. They took the time to have tea with me and discuss my trip from start to finish over a map, they held my luggage safely while I was in the mountains, and they checked in at possible friction points (like flights) to make sure everything was going well.

I’ve heard horror stories from backpackers who used other companies and there are a ton around here. It was overwhelming for me to pick one, but Discover Altitude was recommended to me so I figured I’d give them a try. This is now the second trip they planned for me. I also recommended them to some friends who did a luxury Everest view trip with them and had nothing but good things to say. You can roll the dice and try someone else, but if you want to take the safe bet and know that you’ll have an amazing trip at a competitive price there’s no other option.

    Great experience!

Sherpa Tej and I trekked for 4 days through the Himalayas. Tracks were relatively easy, and the views were stunning. Tej is a very good guide and arranges beautiful guesthouses with tasty food. Highly recommend it.

    Short Annapurna circuit

Went on a short version of the Annapurna Circuit. Had an awesome time! Went in the middle of the monsoon season. Had a smooth trek with my guide Amar. He was kind and knowledgeable. Made getting around very easy. Bring some flexibility and an open mindset into the mountains, and you’ll have a good time!

No rain, no crowds, and warm weather which was great, but also lots of cloud cover, so limited views of the high peaks. Hope to come back for another trek in the future!

If you want to experience true, kind Nepali hospitality and a great trek, don’t look for another agency.

I had the incredible opportunity to complete 4 different treks with Discover Altitude: Three Passes, ABC, Annapurna Circuit and Langtang. Each time, the experience exceeded my expectations! The owners, Kumar and Santosh, along with their guides are exceptionally professional, knowledgeable and attentive to every detail. Everything was very well planned for all treks, and I felt safe even at the highest altitudes, thanks to their friendly and supportive guides.

There are many agencies to choose from, and I visited many, but when I met Kumar and Santosh the quality of their personalities quickly became evident. They treated me as a friend they genuinely wanted to support, not just a client, caring only about the money. Even if I hadn’t signed up, they would have treated me the same, not as potential or lost business. This authenticity is why I chose them! This was the only agency where I had that gut feeling, which turned out to be correct. They always went the extra mile. Before each trek, they spent a lot of time going through all the details with me to ensure I had everything I needed and was ready to go. They also checked up on me along the way. During all these times, they truly became my friends!

If you want to experience true, kind Nepali hospitality and a great trek, don’t look for another agency. They are also very competitively priced for both solo and group trips! I cannot recommend them highly enough!

Mustang - Kagbeni, Muktinath 6-day tour

We chose a 6-day course that tours Kagbeni and Muktinath, the gateway to Mustang from Kathmandu. It takes 3 days to actually walk, so it's a safe course even for beginners.

Fly from Kathmandu to Pokhara. Fly from Pokhara to Jomsom (30-minute flight), then hike 3 hours to Kagbeni. Hike 5-6 hours to Muktinath. Return to Jomsom via a different route. Take a lunch break at Rupna on the way. Fly to Pokhara. Fly back to Kathmandu.

It was late May before the rainy season, but we were blessed with clear skies and were able to see the beautiful mountain ranges of Nilgiri and Annapurna. The desolate landscape of Mustang was very beautiful, and it was a very interesting experience to get a glimpse of the life of the villagers in Kagbeni.

It was quite hot during the daytime walks in late May. Short sleeves are fine. If you don't want to get sunburned, wear thin long sleeves. Since it gets cold in the mornings and evenings in Muktinath, I wore a light down jacket, but if you layer up a warm long sleeve jacket, you can wear a hiking jacket instead of a down jacket.

Our trekking guide, Amar, was very kind and not only guided us on hiking but also carefully explained the history and people's lives. (In English) He always took care to make the trek comfortable, and the walking pace was adjusted to suit our physical strength, so we were able to enjoy it without any strain.

Kumar handled advance reservations and questions, and he responded to emails very quickly. After arriving in Kathmandu, I visited the office and Kumar gave me a brief explanation of the schedule. In Kathmandu, Santosh handled my communications and accompanied me to the transfer between the hotel and the airport. Both of them were cheerful and kind.
During the tour, I asked to change my plan to stay in Pokhara for two nights after the trek (of course, the additional hotel fee was at my own expense), and I am grateful that he quickly and readily responded to my request, such as changing my flight on the return trip.

A short walk from Jomsom to Muktinath.

We had great dealings with Kumar and the team at Discover Altitude. Kumar was our initial contact, and Santosh was our day to day contact on-the-ground. Their communication was great, and everything went smoothly.

Before departing for Nepal, we emailed Kumar about what we had in mind, and he presented us with different options. We settled on a short trip from Jomsom to Muktinath - flying from Kathmandu to Pokhara and on to Jomsom the next day to commence our hike. (We took the same air-route in reverse on our way back.) In total, the trip was six or seven days, with three days hiking. (This worked out well due to our schedule, but next time we might spend a few more days walking.)

Our guide on the trip was Amar Magar. We really recommend him. (Ask for him by name!) He was thoughtful, organised, and provided clear information on what we were doing each day. His patience and pleasant manner made the trip really enjoyable.

The hike itself was good. The area from Jomsom to Kagbeni (where we stopped for the first night) was primarily along the road and the riverbed, and the scenery was primarily the dry and desolate scenery one might expect of the Mustang area. Kagbeni was a nice village to rest. (There are a number of tea houses, and an interesting temple where one of the monks showed us around.) The walk up to Muktinath the next day was a little bit tough - being a climb of about 1,000 meters. (Not 'technically' tough; more of a challenge due to low fitness levels!) After resting, we visited the Hindu pilgrimage site, which was quite an interesting experience as it attracts a lot of visitors. We stayed the night at a tea house in Muktinath, and then walked back to Jomsom via a different route, stopping at a village called Lupna on the way back. The route from Muktinath to Lupna was probably the highlight of our trip, with much more diverse terrain, including great alpine scenery, fantastic rocky cliffs and forests, and the picturesque village of Lupna itself, with a very old temple and some caves used for solitary retreats.

If you have limited time, then I would recommend the approach we took. It provides a glimpse of the Mustang region (without getting in to the Upper Mustang region, which requires more time and an expensive permit), and a taste of walking in the region. On our walk, we met a number of people who had walked the Annapurna Circuit, taking around two weeks. We might plan better and aim to do that next time!

In terms of practical considerations, noting it was mid-May, we found that we were able to walk in t-shirts and long pants. We carried a lot of warm clothing with us, but didn't need really it. (We were a bit cold briefly after arriving at Muktinath, but generally we didn't use our warm clothing. It would be smart to take something - but no need to take too much.) The bedding provided in the rooms was more than adequate, and we didn't need our own sleeping bags. (Taking a sleeping bag liner might suffice from a cleanliness perspective if this is a concern.)

    FAQs

Q1. How long is the Annapurna base camp trek?

It depends on which route you chose according to your time-frame; the shortest base camp can be done in 6-7 days and the longest to 12-14 days and you also can string some other trek if you want to.

Covering a distance of 75 km approximately, with 10-12 km per day hiking for 6 hours every day for beginners.

Q2. Is the Annapurna base camp trek dangerous?

Normally, Snowfall takes place in the Himalayas of Nepal before winter and till the end of the winter season which is from November to the end of January. so, if it snows heavy there is a big chance of an avalanche in between Deurali to Machhapuchhare base camp which can be Dangerous trekking to Annapurna base camp, rest are normal trail throughout the year.

Q3. Is Annapurna hard to climb?

Annapurna is the second hardest mountain to climb just after k2. Steeper slopes, high avalanche risk makes it harder to summit Mount Annapurna.

Q4. Do you get altitude sickness in Annapurna base camp trek?

Normally people start feeling altitude illness after 3000 meters above sea level. The last destination of Annapurna base camp is at an altitude of 4130 meters above sea level. The main reason for altitude sickness is gaining elevation quicker in a short span of time. So in this trek, you need to go slowly after Deurali (3200m) onwards which helps to acclimatize your body.

Q5. How much it cost for accommodation in Annapurna base camp trek?

The cost of accommodation varies on what type of accommodation you choose such as a normal room just with a bed or a room with a toilet inside (in someplace). Normal room cost about $4-5 USD and comfort room cost from $15 USD above.

Yes, you can trek Annapurna base camp without a guide but we recommend travelers to trek with a guide or with your friend as there are few bad incidents that happened to solo travelers around this region. This was due to diverse trekking trails with almost no signboard to indicate the location. Trekking with a local guide gives you information about local culture and their tradition as well as they can assure some safety or bring help when you need it.

Q10. Can I trek solo or on my own in Annapurna base camp?

Yes, you can trek solo or at own your own to Annapurna base camp but our recommendation is not to do so as this doesn’t ensure your safety and help when you need an emergency. Moreover, you won't be able to understand much of the culture and tradition of locals without through local Nepali guide.

Q11. Is there mobile connectivity in Annapurna base camp trek?

The Internet has become part of our life, these days normally internet, mobile network, and electricity are accessible everywhere in the Himalayas of Nepal.

Annapurna region provides network facilities as well, in tea-house, we will be connected with WiFi paying a certain amount of money and you can also use SIM cards for data packages which are cheap and affordable. This mobile network works normally in all the Annapurna region, but sometimes weather conditions might affect network connection.

Q12. Is Annapurna harder than k2?

Both K2 and Annapurna I are above 8000 meters' mountain but Annapurna has the highest death rate of 32% in which Out of 191 climbers 61 climbers have died so far on Annapurna I, the steep climb of 3 kilometers of the wall makes it a harder mountain to summit.

Annapurna and Everest region both are popular trekking destination in Nepal and both carries its own variation, culture, and diversity, making both the region different from each other.

Annapurna is in the western part where lies the 10th highest mountains in a long range of Annapurna, trekking in this region you can experience variation in climate as you go through tropical climate zone to alpine climate zone and so as the different ethnic group of people, culture, religion and their tradition living in lower elevation to higher elevation.
