The helicopter flight to Kathmandu after the Kala Patthar excursion lets you skip three days of descending to Lukla, which is an additional 65 kilometers of walking.

What to expect during the Everest Base Camp trekking with helicopter return?

The Everest Base Camp trek with helicopter return combines hiking and a helicopter tour/flight. The trip balances adventure and comfort, and makes this trek doable for all ages of trekkers. Likewise, the short 9-day itinerary makes trekking to EBC possible for travelers on a short vacation.

You can expect the following things during the Everest Base Camp trek with a helicopter return:

  • Less walking: The helicopter flight shortens the standard 11-day EBC hike to a 9-day walk (excluding arrival and departure from Nepal). Just 2 to 3 fewer days remove 65 kilometers of distance from the trek.
  • Experience the famous commercial Lukla flight: You will start the Everest Base Camp helicopter return trek with the famous commercial Lukla flight. The flight either takes off from Kathmandu Airport or Ramechhap Airport. Flying in a tiny propeller aircraft and landing at an airport located 2,860 meters above sea level will be an experience of a lifetime in itself.
  • Discover majestic Himalayan mountains: The main highlight of the EBC trek is the stunning mountains. During trekking, you will see an uncountable number of mountains, peaks, and hills. Some famous ones are Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Nuptse, Thamserku, Makalu, Cho Oyu, Island Peak, Cholatse, Taboche, Khumbutse, and Pumori.
  • Explore the diverse climatic zones of the Sagarmatha National Park: The Everest Base Camp trail enters the Sagarmatha National Park from Monjo village onwards on the second day of the trek. The national park goes up to Mount Everest and protects and preserves every living being, natural wonders, and local heritage. You will trek through lush rhododendron forests, gradually ascend to alpine terraced fields, and enter the glacial zone.
  • Cross many suspension bridges on the way: From day one of the trek, you will follow the Dudh Koshi River and hike to the upper elevation. The trail is connected through many suspension bridges, especially at lower elevations. The Tenzing-Hillary Suspension Bridge is one of the longest and most popular bridges.
  • Comfortable lodge accommodation and delicious meals: The EBC trail is dotted with lodges and tea houses for trekkers where they can rest and have food. You can choose an affordable, basic, but comfortable lodge or a luxury lodge with great amenities and services, as per your budget.
  • Observe the lifestyle of Sherpas and other mountain communities and get to know them closely: Sherpas are the natives of the Everest region. Apart from them, Rai, Lama, Limbu, and Bhotiya are other ethnic groups that live in the Everest region. During trekking, you will see their lifestyle and traditions and interact with them.
  • Visit ancient monasteries on the way: Not many trekkers realize this, but during the EBC trek, they also have excellent cultural exploration. From the myths and legends to ancient monasteries and stupas, you will get a great opportunity to learn about local culture and beliefs. Tengboche and Pangboche monasteries are the two major religious sites you will visit during the Everest Base Camp trek with a helicopter return.
  • Exciting acclimatization hikes: We have two acclimatization days in our 9-day EBC helicopter return trek. We have strategically placed acclimatization breaks in Namche Bazaar and Dingboche village, which is best for avoiding altitude sickness. For the hike, you will visit Hotel Everest View and Nangkartshang Hill.
  • Glacier and moraine walking: After Dingboche village, glacier and moraine walking is inevitable because you are above the treeline.
  • Diverse landscapes: Varying altitudes and changing climatic zones mean you will see diverse landscapes throughout the trek. Lush Valleys and rhododendron forested hills change to glacier fields and rocky peaks.
  • Helicopter flight back to Kathmandu: After enjoying a gorgeous sunrise and Mount Everest view from Kala Patthar, you will return to Gorak Shep and prepare to take a helicopter flight back to Kathmandu. It will be an incredible feeling to see the trail that you used to hike up during the flight. Likewise, the aerial views of the villages and mountains are also excellent.
  • Trek with a local guide and porter: You will be accompanied by one of our local guides and porters during the trek. It ensures your safety in the remote mountains and makes the trek enlightening and fun.

Scenic View of the High Himalayas from a Helicopter

One of the best deals with Everest Base Camp Trek Heli Return will be to explore the panoramic view of the Himalayas during the trek, and also while returning from the Helicopter.

While returning by helicopter, you will enjoy mesmerizing views of Khumbu Glacier, Namche Bazaar, Sherpa Villages, and above all, the views of the high Himalayas, including Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Cho Oyu, and Makalu. These are the Himalayas above 8000 meters.

Bidding farewell to the Himalayas, you will fly through the hills into the metropolitan city of Kathmandu.

Everest Base Camp trek with helicopter return difficulty

The Everest Base Camp trek, with or without a helicopter return flight, is a difficult endeavor, especially for those who are not physically active and in great shape.

One thing that trekkers really underestimate is the terrain, which we call Nepali Flat. This means it is not like Kilimanjaro, where you spend the first four days walking uphill and then turn around and come back downhill again.

On the Everest Base Camp trek, there is a lot of uphill and downhill walking on both sides. Reaching Everest Base Camp is not the end of the trek. You still have almost four days of walking back to Lukla.

Though the altitude drops, you will still constantly ascend and descend. The best part of the Everest Base Camp trek with helicopter return is that you get to skip the return walking.

So, following the helicopter return itinerary, you will end the trek after hiking to Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar. Of course, it makes the trek a little bit less challenging and more achievable for beginner trekkers.

Below, we have shared different factors that make the Everest Base Camp trekking challenging:

  • Rugged terrain: The Everest Base Camp trekking route is not flat. The terrain is uneven, rocky, and even steep in a few sections. Throughout the journey, you have to do many uphill and downhill walks, which demands good stamina and strength.
  • High-altitude: The Everest Base Camp trek starts at 2,860 meters and ascends to 5,545 meters above sea level. You gain around 500 meters every day. As the altitude changes, the terrain, climate, and vegetation also change. Once you go above 3,000 meters, you will start to see the effects of high altitude. Walking becomes difficult because of thin air and low oxygen levels.
  • Trek duration and distance: You will walk nine days from Lukla to Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar. The Everest Base Camp trek distance is approximately 120 kilometers (65 kilometers each way), but you will only walk 65 kilometers on this trek. Every day, you will trek 9 to 11 km, which takes 6 to 7 hours. You have to be in good health and shape to walk nine days and almost 7 hours daily.
  • Remote location: Trekkers have to understand that the Everest Base Camp trek is not a comfortable, luxury gateway. It is an adventure trek in a remote location. Once you go above Dingboche village, the services become even more limited. You have to make peace with not getting modern conveniences and even basic amenities. Trekkers must be ready to adjust to basic facilities on the EBC trek route.
  • Khumbu cough: Khumbu cough is one of the most underrated challenges on the Everest Base Camp trek. It is a nuance that trekkers face at higher altitudes because of cold and dry air. The best way to avoid it is by covering your neck and mouth with a buff. Likewise, keep yourself hydrated and acclimatized. Note that Khumbu cough can last several weeks, so please be cautious.

Preparation for the Everest Base Camp trek with helicopter return

You do not need any special skills to get up to the Everest Base Camp. You can literally just hike, but the fitter you are, the more you will enjoy the trek.

Walking 9 to 11 kilometers a day for several days is easier said than done, especially at high altitudes. So, try to be in your peak physical condition as you can be while starting the trek.

  • Physical preparation: Start with activities like cycling, jogging, swimming, and running. These activities are great for improving stamina and endurance. Likewise, take long walks 3 to 4 times a week with a backpack weighing at least 5 kg. You can go on day hikes or a short high-altitude trek before EBC. It will help you acclimatize well during EBC. Weight training is also good for making your core strong.
  • Mental preparation: Learn about the EBC trek. Watch videos on YouTube and TikTok. It will give you an idea of what to expect during the trek and clear your perspective. Practice yoga and deep breathing. You have to push yourself mentally a lot during the trek.

Some helpful tips for the Everest Base Camp helicopter return trek

  • Start your Everest Base Camp trek preparations early. Book the trek early. You can keep 4 to 8 weeks or more on hand depending on your fitness. Get your body accustomed to walking long hours during this duration and start arranging trekking clothes, gear, and essentials.
  • For the Everest Base Camp trek with helicopter return, you do not have to be extremely strong or possess previous high-altitude experience. But what you need is decent stamina and endurance to walk 6 hours a day. So, if you are new to trekking or not physically fit, plan a training regime to help you improve your strength, stamina, and endurance, and train for 6 to 8 weeks before the trek starts.
  • Consult your doctor and get the necessary vaccinations. Also, talk about high altitude and ways you can deal with it.
  • Get your trekking gear early if you plan to buy new ones and get used to them. Especially buy your trekking boots early and break into them. Trust us, you do not want to bring a brand new pair of trekking boots to the mountains. They will give you blisters and make walking very challenging.
  • Please follow our EBC trek packing list at the end of the page to pack for the trek.
  • Some essentials that no trekker should forget to bring on an EBC trek are UV sunglasses, moisturizer, SPF, lip balm, toilet paper, water bladder, touch-screen compatible gloves, fuzzy socks, electrolyte powder, buff, protein bars and snacks, solar power bank, and some travelers games or pre-downloaded music/audiobook/podcasts.
  • Keep yourself hydrated during trekking and eat well. You need energy to walk for 6 hours a day.
  • During trekking, take it slow and enjoy nature. You do not have to hike fast. Maintain your pace and acclimatize properly.
  • Please be careful while walking along the hillsides. If you happen to share the trail with mules or yaks, stand on the cliffside, not the edge, and let the animals pass before you move. Do not disturb them.
  • Select the right season to trek. It should fit your physical conditions and likings.
  • Do not trek to Everest Base Camp alone. The Himalayas are no place to be alone. The first 1-2 days of the journey will be easy to manage; however, once you leave the lower trails and enter the alpine zone, loneliness will affect your journey a lot.
  • If you feel any discomfort, communicate with your guide. Listen to your body and only push yourself when necessary. You have to be patient in the mountains; otherwise, you will risk your life and experience.

Lukla is the gateway to the Everest Region. From Kathmandu, it's around a 30 to 35-minute flight to Lukla. During the flight, we can see the stunning aerial panorama of the Himalayas.

After landing at Lukla Airport, we will fetch our luggage and meet the porter. We will then hike down 200 meters to Phakding village to spend the night.

The descent is necessary to avoid altitude sickness because the altitude gain between Kathmandu and Lukla is substantial. The trail goes through lush forests and small villages, crossing several suspension bridges over the Dudh Koshi River.

Important Lukla flight update:

Lukla flights are operated from Kathmandu airport in June, July, August, December, January, and February. In other months- March, April, May, September, October, and November, the Lukla flights are operated from Ramechhap Airport.

Useful Info

The best time to do the Everest Base Camp trek with helicopter return

It depends on what kind of experience you would like. There are four seasons - spring (March to May), summer/monsoon (June to August), autumn (September to November), and winter (December to February).

The weather, climate, and vegetation are different in all seasons. Spring and autumn are the most famous times of the year to trek to Everest Base Camp. We personally love hiking to EBC in autumn because we think the weather is most stable and clear in the afternoons.

So, you have the best views over the mountains during sunsets and the sky full of stars at night. It is just so beautiful. Likewise, there are also comparatively fewer trekkers during autumn.

Similarly, if you want to see Everest Base Camp's beauty and the power it holds during the climbing season, trek in spring. It is the time when the base camp is covered with thousands of tents and is busy with mountaineers, Sherpas, and their support crew.

Please understand that trekkers are not allowed to spend time in tents at the base camp. It is only available for climbers and their support crew with a climbing permit.

Finally, if you are looking for a time to be alone on the trail, you can trek in winter. It will be colder and more snow, but no crowd at all. Summer is not really a good time for Everest Base Camp trekking because it is also the monsoon season.

The weather is very erratic, and the sky has dense clouds, which can obstruct the views. You also have to deal with muddy trails and delays in the commercial Lukla and helicopter flights.

Everest Base Camp trek temperature in different seasons

The temperature along the Everest Base Camp trail and at Everest Base Camp itself varies a lot throughout the year. One thing to note is that the climate is cold at night and morning throughout the year because of the high altitude. During the daytime, you may get hot because of the sun.

We have shared the temperature at Everest Base Camp in different seasons below:

  • Spring (March to May): 0°C to 25°C, may drop below freezing point
  • Summer/monsoon (June to August): 0°C to 30°C
  • Autumn (September to November): 0°C to 20°C
  • Winter (December to February): - 25°C to -5°C and can go lower

Food and accommodation during the Everest Base Camp trek with helicopter return

Food and accommodation on the Everest Base Camp trek route are phenomenal. Both budget and luxury travelers will find ample options. If you buy our Everest Base Camp trek with a helicopter return package, all accommodations and meals during trekking will be pre-arranged for you. So you do not have to worry about them. We will get you the best lodges and service.

  • Basic lodge: Our EBC helicopter return trek package includes a basic lodge. Rooms are small and clean and shared between two trekkers. Single rooms cost a few extra bucks, and you have to pre-inform us.
  • Services in basic lodge: Washrooms are common. Very few basic lodges offer private washrooms. Western-style toilets are available everywhere. Services like WiFi, hot showers, and charging cost extra money and are not covered by our package cost.
  • Luxury lodge: If your budget allows, you can upgrade to the luxury lodges. It will enhance your EBC trek experience and make it even more doable. Luxury lodges offer elegant interiors and amenities like charging, hot showers, WiFi, spacious rooms, and balconies for free of cost. You will get ensuite washrooms in all luxury lodges.
  • Meals during trekking: You will get three meals a day during trekking. The lodges also offer meals. The menu on the EBC route is extensive. You will have many options, such as thukpa, dal bhat, curry, stew, fried rice, pizza, burgers, pasta, French fries, porridge, oats, steak, eggs, bakery items, pudding, etc.

Travel insurance for EBC trek

You can purchase travel insurance for the Everest Base Camp trek in your country. Do not plan to buy in Nepal because there are no good options for foreigners. Your travel insurance should cover emergency helicopter evacuation and medical bills.

Before joining the trek, you must provide us with your travel insurance documents that have the necessary coverages. We use travel insurance in case we have to airlift you due to an unforseen situation.

Permits and permissions for the Everest Base Camp helicopter return trek

It is something that trekkers do not have to worry about while trekking to Everest Base Camp with us. We will take care of the necessary permits for the Everest Base Camp trek with helicopter return.

Our team will obtain it on your behalf. This trek requires two permits- the Sagarmatha National Park permit and the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality entrance permit.

The permits cost USD 30 and USD 20 per person, respectively. The permit fees are already included in our package cost.

Health and safety guide for the Everest Base Camp trek with helicopter return

Please follow the tips below to ensure your health and safety during the Everest Base Camp trekking and the helicopter flight:

  • If you have diabetes, heart disease, asthma, allergies, or any medical condition that may be triggered during the Everest Base Camp trekking, kindly talk to your doctor and inform us beforehand. Pack all your medications for the journey.
  • Do not remove acclimatization days from your itinerary. It is necessary to avoid altitude sickness during trekking.
  • Layer the trekking clothes accurately and zip and unzip them as needed. Because of the changing altitude, you may constantly feel hot one minute and cold another.
  • Drink plenty of water to minimize dehydration. It is important to avoid altitude sickness. Likewise, have soups and ginger honey tea daily.
  • Maintain your pace and take deep breaths to avoid overexertion.
  • You may get headaches or get lightheaded because of the high altitude above Dingboche village. Please be aware of your body and how it feels and actively communicate it with your guide.
  • If you eat non-veg dishes, inquire about the meat's freshness or ask your guide. It is a good step to avoid indigestion or stomach ache because most meats are frozen in the mountains.
  • Do not move around once you are in the helicopter and ready to take off. Be seated in your place during the flight.
  • Do not smoke inside the helicopter. Do not get out of the helicopter until your pilot gives the signal.

Amazing EBC trek

I did a private EBC trek visiting Kala Patthar and Ama Dablam base camp with Discover Altitude in November 2024. The trip was fantastic and my guide Teju was amazing! Kumar and Santosh (owner of the agency and his colleague) are super friendly, they greet you at the airport and drop you off when you’re leaving, you get a detailed trip briefing before you leave. My guide Teju was very helpful and knowledgeable, he does the best practices about acclimating to altitude and keeping his clients healthy with constant reminders about proper clothing and using your buff to avoid dust. We got back to Kathmandu without the infamous Khumbu cough! Booking the private trek was a great option for me as I could customize my itinerary any way I wanted and go at the pace that worked for me.
I very highly recommend Discover Altitude, they’re an amazing team and reliable and knowledgeable partners in Nepal!

Amazing EBC and Kalapatthar Trek Experience with Discover Altitude

I recently completed the Everest Base Trek with Kalapatthar, guided by Discover Altitude, and I couldn’t be more grateful for the experience. As a solo traveler, I felt well-supported and safe throughout the entire journey. Santosh, my guide, was exceptional—attentive, knowledgeable, and always ready to assist with anything I needed. The trek was challenging but incredibly rewarding, and the team’s professionalism made it even more memorable.
Highly recommend Discover Altitude for anyone looking to trek in Nepal

Your search for a trekking company can stop here!

I can’t say enough great things about Kumar and Santosh at Discover Altitude. They set my trip up with minimal notice, even made some custom changes and everything went perfectly. They have great connections for everything tourism in Nepal. If you want a guide to show you around Kathmandu-they’ve got you. If you want to go for a trek-it’s their bread and butter. If you want to go for an expedition at half the cost of western companies with guides whose experience will blow your mind-easy day. Whether you’re planning a trip for next year or next week they will take care of you like family. They took the time to have tea with me and discuss my trip from start to finish over a map, they held my luggage safely while I was in the mountains, and they checked in at possible friction points (like flights) to make sure everything was going well.

I’ve heard horror stories from backpackers who used other companies and there are a ton around here. It was overwhelming for me to pick one, but Discover Altitude was recommended to me so I figured I’d give them a try. This is now the second trip they planned for me. I also recommended them to some friends who did a luxury Everest view trip with them and had nothing but good things to say. You can roll the dice and try someone else, but if you want to take the safe bet and know that you’ll have an amazing trip at a competitive price there’s no other option.

Great EBC trip

With my friend, we did the Everest Base Camp 9-day trail. The experience was great, though quite intense - but we were well prepared. We saw all the peaks on the way and stayed in nice places with good views and rooms. The views on the way are really great - Amadablan, Everest, Lhotse...
It was a very mind-refreshing and inspiring trip - thanks to Rajesh, our guide, and Bala, our porter!

If you want to experience true, kind Nepali hospitality and a great trek, don’t look for another agency.

I had the incredible opportunity to complete 4 different treks with Discover Altitude: Three Passes, ABC, Annapurna Circuit and Langtang. Each time, the experience exceeded my expectations! The owners, Kumar and Santosh, along with their guides are exceptionally professional, knowledgeable and attentive to every detail. Everything was very well planned for all treks, and I felt safe even at the highest altitudes, thanks to their friendly and supportive guides.

There are many agencies to choose from, and I visited many, but when I met Kumar and Santosh the quality of their personalities quickly became evident. They treated me as a friend they genuinely wanted to support, not just a client, caring only about the money. Even if I hadn’t signed up, they would have treated me the same, not as potential or lost business. This authenticity is why I chose them! This was the only agency where I had that gut feeling, which turned out to be correct. They always went the extra mile. Before each trek, they spent a lot of time going through all the details with me to ensure I had everything I needed and was ready to go. They also checked up on me along the way. During all these times, they truly became my friends!

If you want to experience true, kind Nepali hospitality and a great trek, don’t look for another agency. They are also very competitively priced for both solo and group trips! I cannot recommend them highly enough!

Mustang - Kagbeni, Muktinath 6-day tour

We chose a 6-day course that tours Kagbeni and Muktinath, the gateway to Mustang from Kathmandu. It takes 3 days to actually walk, so it's a safe course even for beginners.

Fly from Kathmandu to Pokhara. Fly from Pokhara to Jomsom (30-minute flight), then hike 3 hours to Kagbeni. Hike 5-6 hours to Muktinath. Return to Jomsom via a different route. Take a lunch break at Rupna on the way. Fly to Pokhara. Fly back to Kathmandu.

It was late May before the rainy season, but we were blessed with clear skies and were able to see the beautiful mountain ranges of Nilgiri and Annapurna. The desolate landscape of Mustang was very beautiful, and it was a very interesting experience to get a glimpse of the life of the villagers in Kagbeni.

It was quite hot during the daytime walks in late May. Short sleeves are fine. If you don't want to get sunburned, wear thin long sleeves. Since it gets cold in the mornings and evenings in Muktinath, I wore a light down jacket, but if you layer up a warm long sleeve jacket, you can wear a hiking jacket instead of a down jacket.

Our trekking guide, Amar, was very kind and not only guided us on hiking but also carefully explained the history and people's lives. (In English) He always took care to make the trek comfortable, and the walking pace was adjusted to suit our physical strength, so we were able to enjoy it without any strain.

Kumar handled advance reservations and questions, and he responded to emails very quickly. After arriving in Kathmandu, I visited the office and Kumar gave me a brief explanation of the schedule. In Kathmandu, Santosh handled my communications and accompanied me to the transfer between the hotel and the airport. Both of them were cheerful and kind.
During the tour, I asked to change my plan to stay in Pokhara for two nights after the trek (of course, the additional hotel fee was at my own expense), and I am grateful that he quickly and readily responded to my request, such as changing my flight on the return trip.

A short walk from Jomsom to Muktinath.

We had great dealings with Kumar and the team at Discover Altitude. Kumar was our initial contact, and Santosh was our day to day contact on-the-ground. Their communication was great, and everything went smoothly.

Before departing for Nepal, we emailed Kumar about what we had in mind, and he presented us with different options. We settled on a short trip from Jomsom to Muktinath - flying from Kathmandu to Pokhara and on to Jomsom the next day to commence our hike. (We took the same air-route in reverse on our way back.) In total, the trip was six or seven days, with three days hiking. (This worked out well due to our schedule, but next time we might spend a few more days walking.)

Our guide on the trip was Amar Magar. We really recommend him. (Ask for him by name!) He was thoughtful, organised, and provided clear information on what we were doing each day. His patience and pleasant manner made the trip really enjoyable.

The hike itself was good. The area from Jomsom to Kagbeni (where we stopped for the first night) was primarily along the road and the riverbed, and the scenery was primarily the dry and desolate scenery one might expect of the Mustang area. Kagbeni was a nice village to rest. (There are a number of tea houses, and an interesting temple where one of the monks showed us around.) The walk up to Muktinath the next day was a little bit tough - being a climb of about 1,000 meters. (Not 'technically' tough; more of a challenge due to low fitness levels!) After resting, we visited the Hindu pilgrimage site, which was quite an interesting experience as it attracts a lot of visitors. We stayed the night at a tea house in Muktinath, and then walked back to Jomsom via a different route, stopping at a village called Lupna on the way back. The route from Muktinath to Lupna was probably the highlight of our trip, with much more diverse terrain, including great alpine scenery, fantastic rocky cliffs and forests, and the picturesque village of Lupna itself, with a very old temple and some caves used for solitary retreats.

If you have limited time, then I would recommend the approach we took. It provides a glimpse of the Mustang region (without getting in to the Upper Mustang region, which requires more time and an expensive permit), and a taste of walking in the region. On our walk, we met a number of people who had walked the Annapurna Circuit, taking around two weeks. We might plan better and aim to do that next time!

In terms of practical considerations, noting it was mid-May, we found that we were able to walk in t-shirts and long pants. We carried a lot of warm clothing with us, but didn't need really it. (We were a bit cold briefly after arriving at Muktinath, but generally we didn't use our warm clothing. It would be smart to take something - but no need to take too much.) The bedding provided in the rooms was more than adequate, and we didn't need our own sleeping bags. (Taking a sleeping bag liner might suffice from a cleanliness perspective if this is a concern.)
