Dhaulagiri circuit is a wild region for trekking. Dhaulagiri circuit is Remote and vast and this is the perfect area to show the wide range of vegetation and wildlife inhabiting this area of Nepal that most do not take the time to go and explore.

Dhaulagiri circuit trek is situated in the mid-western part of Nepal which provides a stunning panoramic view of Mount Dhaulagiri, the seventh highest mountain in the world, with other majestic peaks surrounding it.

Dhaulagiri trekking goes around mount Dhaulagiri and over the French Pass(5,360m) and Dhampus Pass(5258m) which are the highest pass of the trek. So this trek is suitable for those looking for some Greater adventures out in the wild.

As part of promoting the off-the-beaten-path trek Discover Altitude Pvt. Ltd. is promoting the Dhaulagiri circuit trekking for 2022/2023 in which we have special discount offers for the trekkers which you can contact us for more details.

How to Get to the trailhead of Dhaulagiri circuit trekking?

You can choose different options to get to the trailhead of Dhaulagiri circuit treks in which you can drive to Pokhara from Kathmandu which takes about 6 hours to reach. Then it's another drive to Darbang (1180m) via Beni bazaar which is as far as you can drive nowadays.

But if you want to make it quicker to the trailhead. You can take an early morning flight to Pokhara which takes about 30 minutes and drive to Darbang village via Beni Bazaar which saves one day.

Dhaulagiri circuit trek route

The journey for the Dhaulagiri circuit trek begins reaching Darbang (1180m) for the first night of the trekking journey. Darbang was once a small village and now turned into a small marketplace due to road access. After the Darbang trek goes onwards to Sibang (1770m) and to Naura (2500m) on our second and third night of the trek which passes through local villages and farmlands.

After this, the trek continues gradually to Dobang(2520m) and to the Italian base camp(3660m) for another two nights. At the Italian base camp, we take an acclimatization day before heading on to a higher elevation. Now our trek has already entered into less vegetation and more into moraine terrain.

Now our trek goes onwards to the Japanese base camp (4200m) before heading to Dhaulagiri base camp (4740m) where again we take another preparation day. Today we climb the nearby hill which provides an excellent view of the Dhaulagiri mountain range and the moraine valley.

Here on our trek enters into a more desolate area of the mountain valley. So, we pass through rugged moraine trail and on the glacier which continues to the highest point of the Dhaulagiri circuit trek, French pass (5360m), and camps down to the hidden valley (4900m) for the night. The trek continues through another high pass of the trek of Dhampus pass (5258m) and long descends to Yak Kharka (4036m) for another night.

Leaving yak Kharka the trail continues to descend and join the famous Annapurna trail at Marpha(2667m).it's one of the beautiful Thakali villages in the lower region of Mustang which has a monastery as well. The Marpha trek follows along the Kaligandaki River to Jomsom (2736m) from where we take a flight to Pokhara on the following day to finish the trek.

Required permits and fees for Dhaulagiri circuit trekking.

  • TIMS CARD (trekking information management system) costs $10 US dollars per person for the organized trekkers and $20 US dollars each for independent trekkers.
  • "Annapurna conservation area entrance fee" which costs 3000 rupees for each trekker as at the end of the trek we meet at Annapurna conservation area.

What not to forget to bring for the Dhaulagiri circuit trek?

  • This trek falls in remote and higher mountain areas which often remain cold during the night and morning, so bring the proper trekking gear for dealing with the coldest mountain weather.
  • Proper medical first aid kit also must bring things as there are not any medical facilities until you Jomsom. You also need to bring a water purifier as there are not any options to buy bottled water or Purified water.
  • Microspikes that fit your trekking shoes are another thing to bring as it is handy to walk in icy places.
  • This trek lies in one of the remote regions of Nepal and there is no teahouse along the trail even if you find some, these are the most basic. So, there are not many options besides staying in tents at least for 4-5 days. Besides this, you also need to suffice with supplies to eat if you are on your own.

Best time of Year to Do Dhaulagiri circuit trekking

Autumn season (September October November). The beginning of September and till mid-November is the best to do the Dhaulagiri circuit trek.

Things to be noted is, on this trek we have to only rely on Tent accommodation on higher ground. So the Late November or after that is not recommended to do this trek as it gets a lot colder and things start to freeze even if it is good weather. So, this might be a huge challenge with the cold.

Spring season (March, April, May). This is considered to be the best time of year for the Dhaulagiri circuit trek as the weather is relatively warmer all these months and moreover, you can enjoy beautiful rhododendron blossoms during the trip.

Useful Info

The list of Trekking Accessories to bring for Dhaulagiri circuit trekking.

Although it differs from each individual's choices and interests. The list of equipment below is a general idea that provides some guidelines for gears to bring during your trek to the Dhaulagiri circuit.

However, we advise you to bring sufficient and warm enough clothes to suit much colder weather as mountain weather is always unpredictable and especially for the remote and high passes trekking like the Dhaulagiri circuit.

Just for a reminder, you can buy all these gears in Kathmandu as well.

Duffel bag

You need a duffel bag that is supposed to be waterproof with a strap along with a TSA lock. In your duffel bag, you keep all the clothes and essential gear while trekking. And this will be carried by our porter. Regarding the size, you can choose from 100 liters to 140 liters as this size allows you to fit most of the things you need for trekking.

Sleeping bag

It is the most important piece of equipment for trekking and climbing. Normally the smaller and lighter the size, the more expensive it is. Regarding the warmth of sleeping bags, down sleeping bags are warmer than synthetic ones. You need to bring a sleeping bag that rates up to -20c and a liner just in case it feels colder.

Daypack bag

It’s a daypack bag that you carry while waking where you put your wallet, camera, water bottle, rain cover, fleece jacket, and windproof jacket. Regarding the size of the daypack bag, the size of a small-medium 30 to 40-liters day bag with some side pockets where you can fit your water bottle or gloves is good. Moreover, if you can fit your Camelbak in your daily carry it is more efficient in the coldest weather as your water doesn't freeze.

Water bottle

You can bring two water bottles in which you can drink in one and treat water in another to refill again. (Nalgene water bottle is good as you can put in hot water as well if you want) you also can bring Camelbak which can be very handy while walking uphill so that you don’t have to take the bag down and drink.

Upper body

  • Short sleeve synthetic t-shirts*3(while trekking you sweat a lot so, synthetic t-shirts are best to bring as they are lightweight and dry fast)
  • Wind shirts*1
  • Long sleeve Merino wool t-shirts*2
  • Synthetic insulated jacket (you can use it for climbing as well)
  • Fleece glove
  • Insulated gloves
  • Buff (trail gets very dusty with trekkers and animals passing by you so, you can use it as a mask)
  • Sunglass
  • Sun hat
  • Fleece hat
  • Rain gear or poncho.

Lower body

  • Trekking shoes (prober boots with grip is recommended as trail are rough so you might twist your ankle)
  • Miro spikes that fit your trekking shoes.
  • Slipper or lightweight shoes (it is handy to wear in the guest house when you have done day trekking)
  • Cotton hiking socks
  • Hiking pants*2
  • Fleece trouser
  • Underwear trousers*2
  • Underwear
  • Waterproof paint

Miscellaneous items

  • Items for drinking water treatments such as Steripen, iodine tablets, chlorine liquids, or water filters. (If you using liquids or tablets it might bring a different taste in water so you can bring some juice-powder to bring a nice taste)
  • Fast drying-camp towel (it's good to have one if you want to wash in the stream during the trek)
  • Body wipes (it comes in handy if you don't have a shower available, especially in higher altitudes where there it’s even difficult to go to the stream)
  • Toilet papers
  • Lip balm
  • Sunscreens (minimum of SPF 40 plus as in higher altitude sunlight are direct and more penetrating.
  • Mobile phone (you can use it as an alarm or you can use it if you want to communicate when there is a Phone signal)
  • Diary
  • Portable solar panel to charge your Mobile for photos.
  • Camera
  • Medical kit (Diamox, Imodium, ibuprofen, throat lozenges, tape, scissor etc.
  • Zip-lock plastic bag (Although you put your all stuff in a duffel bag, however, Zip-lock bag can come in handy when you want to separate your items like toiletries, socks, underwear, and smelly clothes)
  • Headlamp or torchlight
  • Hand sanitizer

Beautiful Nepal

Trekking with Narayan and his team was amazin! One of the best experiences of my life and aside from the vast landscapes and incredible views, the guides on this trip were so informative, humble and just beautiful people. I hope to visit with them again so day and can't recommend their tours enough!

A fantastic guide, an amazing Trek

WOW is all I can say about Ace. Udaya was an amazing guide and was perfect throughout the entire trek. He was friendly, super knowledgeable, and handled everything that I needed from gear to travel. They were always concerned about my comfort and seeing that a memorable trip was had by myself and my partner. I had a medical issue that caused him to both works into the night to get a resolution. Of course, being sick in a foreign country can be a scary ordeal, but it was handled professionally and worked out well.

I can say with certainty that they'll be at the top of my list for my next trip and I can say without reservation that I'd go with them again.
