Amazing EBC trek

I did a private EBC trek visiting Kala Patthar and Ama Dablam base camp with Discover Altitude in November 2024. The trip was fantastic and my guide Teju was amazing! Kumar and Santosh (owner of the agency and his colleague) are super friendly, they greet you at the airport and drop you off when you’re leaving, you get a detailed trip briefing before you leave. My guide Teju was very helpful and knowledgeable, he does the best practices about acclimating to altitude and keeping his clients healthy with constant reminders about proper clothing and using your buff to avoid dust. We got back to Kathmandu without the infamous Khumbu cough! Booking the private trek was a great option for me as I could customize my itinerary any way I wanted and go at the pace that worked for me.
I very highly recommend Discover Altitude, they’re an amazing team and reliable and knowledgeable partners in Nepal!

Amazing EBC and Kalapatthar Trek Experience with Discover Altitude

I recently completed the Everest Base Trek with Kalapatthar, guided by Discover Altitude, and I couldn’t be more grateful for the experience. As a solo traveler, I felt well-supported and safe throughout the entire journey. Santosh, my guide, was exceptional—attentive, knowledgeable, and always ready to assist with anything I needed. The trek was challenging but incredibly rewarding, and the team’s professionalism made it even more memorable.
Highly recommend Discover Altitude for anyone looking to trek in Nepal

Your search for a trekking company can stop here!

I can’t say enough great things about Kumar and Santosh at Discover Altitude. They set my trip up with minimal notice, even made some custom changes and everything went perfectly. They have great connections for everything tourism in Nepal. If you want a guide to show you around Kathmandu-they’ve got you. If you want to go for a trek-it’s their bread and butter. If you want to go for an expedition at half the cost of western companies with guides whose experience will blow your mind-easy day. Whether you’re planning a trip for next year or next week they will take care of you like family. They took the time to have tea with me and discuss my trip from start to finish over a map, they held my luggage safely while I was in the mountains, and they checked in at possible friction points (like flights) to make sure everything was going well.

I’ve heard horror stories from backpackers who used other companies and there are a ton around here. It was overwhelming for me to pick one, but Discover Altitude was recommended to me so I figured I’d give them a try. This is now the second trip they planned for me. I also recommended them to some friends who did a luxury Everest view trip with them and had nothing but good things to say. You can roll the dice and try someone else, but if you want to take the safe bet and know that you’ll have an amazing trip at a competitive price there’s no other option.

Great EBC trip

With my friend, we did the Everest Base Camp 9-day trail. The experience was great, though quite intense - but we were well prepared. We saw all the peaks on the way and stayed in nice places with good views and rooms. The views on the way are really great - Amadablan, Everest, Lhotse...
It was a very mind-refreshing and inspiring trip - thanks to Rajesh, our guide, and Bala, our porter!

Everest Base Camp

The Everest Base Camp trek was an amazing experience! My guide, Bhakta, was excellent throughout the journey. He was very informative about the region. He allowed me to set my pace and lead the trek. He was always encouraging, even when the trek got challenging. I have enjoyed his company and learned a great deal about trekking in high altitude. I am grateful to have had such a wonderful human being as my sherpa. I highly recommend him as a guide.

If you want to experience true, kind Nepali hospitality and a great trek, don’t look for another agency.

I had the incredible opportunity to complete 4 different treks with Discover Altitude: Three Passes, ABC, Annapurna Circuit and Langtang. Each time, the experience exceeded my expectations! The owners, Kumar and Santosh, along with their guides are exceptionally professional, knowledgeable and attentive to every detail. Everything was very well planned for all treks, and I felt safe even at the highest altitudes, thanks to their friendly and supportive guides.

There are many agencies to choose from, and I visited many, but when I met Kumar and Santosh the quality of their personalities quickly became evident. They treated me as a friend they genuinely wanted to support, not just a client, caring only about the money. Even if I hadn’t signed up, they would have treated me the same, not as potential or lost business. This authenticity is why I chose them! This was the only agency where I had that gut feeling, which turned out to be correct. They always went the extra mile. Before each trek, they spent a lot of time going through all the details with me to ensure I had everything I needed and was ready to go. They also checked up on me along the way. During all these times, they truly became my friends!

If you want to experience true, kind Nepali hospitality and a great trek, don’t look for another agency. They are also very competitively priced for both solo and group trips! I cannot recommend them highly enough!

Mustang - Kagbeni, Muktinath 6-day tour

We chose a 6-day course that tours Kagbeni and Muktinath, the gateway to Mustang from Kathmandu. It takes 3 days to actually walk, so it's a safe course even for beginners.

Fly from Kathmandu to Pokhara. Fly from Pokhara to Jomsom (30-minute flight), then hike 3 hours to Kagbeni. Hike 5-6 hours to Muktinath. Return to Jomsom via a different route. Take a lunch break at Rupna on the way. Fly to Pokhara. Fly back to Kathmandu.

It was late May before the rainy season, but we were blessed with clear skies and were able to see the beautiful mountain ranges of Nilgiri and Annapurna. The desolate landscape of Mustang was very beautiful, and it was a very interesting experience to get a glimpse of the life of the villagers in Kagbeni.

It was quite hot during the daytime walks in late May. Short sleeves are fine. If you don't want to get sunburned, wear thin long sleeves. Since it gets cold in the mornings and evenings in Muktinath, I wore a light down jacket, but if you layer up a warm long sleeve jacket, you can wear a hiking jacket instead of a down jacket.

Our trekking guide, Amar, was very kind and not only guided us on hiking but also carefully explained the history and people's lives. (In English) He always took care to make the trek comfortable, and the walking pace was adjusted to suit our physical strength, so we were able to enjoy it without any strain.

Kumar handled advance reservations and questions, and he responded to emails very quickly. After arriving in Kathmandu, I visited the office and Kumar gave me a brief explanation of the schedule. In Kathmandu, Santosh handled my communications and accompanied me to the transfer between the hotel and the airport. Both of them were cheerful and kind.
During the tour, I asked to change my plan to stay in Pokhara for two nights after the trek (of course, the additional hotel fee was at my own expense), and I am grateful that he quickly and readily responded to my request, such as changing my flight on the return trip.

A short walk from Jomsom to Muktinath.

We had great dealings with Kumar and the team at Discover Altitude. Kumar was our initial contact, and Santosh was our day to day contact on-the-ground. Their communication was great, and everything went smoothly.

Before departing for Nepal, we emailed Kumar about what we had in mind, and he presented us with different options. We settled on a short trip from Jomsom to Muktinath - flying from Kathmandu to Pokhara and on to Jomsom the next day to commence our hike. (We took the same air-route in reverse on our way back.) In total, the trip was six or seven days, with three days hiking. (This worked out well due to our schedule, but next time we might spend a few more days walking.)

Our guide on the trip was Amar Magar. We really recommend him. (Ask for him by name!) He was thoughtful, organised, and provided clear information on what we were doing each day. His patience and pleasant manner made the trip really enjoyable.

The hike itself was good. The area from Jomsom to Kagbeni (where we stopped for the first night) was primarily along the road and the riverbed, and the scenery was primarily the dry and desolate scenery one might expect of the Mustang area. Kagbeni was a nice village to rest. (There are a number of tea houses, and an interesting temple where one of the monks showed us around.) The walk up to Muktinath the next day was a little bit tough - being a climb of about 1,000 meters. (Not 'technically' tough; more of a challenge due to low fitness levels!) After resting, we visited the Hindu pilgrimage site, which was quite an interesting experience as it attracts a lot of visitors. We stayed the night at a tea house in Muktinath, and then walked back to Jomsom via a different route, stopping at a village called Lupna on the way back. The route from Muktinath to Lupna was probably the highlight of our trip, with much more diverse terrain, including great alpine scenery, fantastic rocky cliffs and forests, and the picturesque village of Lupna itself, with a very old temple and some caves used for solitary retreats.

If you have limited time, then I would recommend the approach we took. It provides a glimpse of the Mustang region (without getting in to the Upper Mustang region, which requires more time and an expensive permit), and a taste of walking in the region. On our walk, we met a number of people who had walked the Annapurna Circuit, taking around two weeks. We might plan better and aim to do that next time!

In terms of practical considerations, noting it was mid-May, we found that we were able to walk in t-shirts and long pants. We carried a lot of warm clothing with us, but didn't need really it. (We were a bit cold briefly after arriving at Muktinath, but generally we didn't use our warm clothing. It would be smart to take something - but no need to take too much.) The bedding provided in the rooms was more than adequate, and we didn't need our own sleeping bags. (Taking a sleeping bag liner might suffice from a cleanliness perspective if this is a concern.)

FAQs

Q1. How difficult is Everest Base Camp Trek?

After the successful summit of Mt. Everest, the highest mountain in the world by Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary in 1953 Mt Everest became known to the world. People’s desire to step to the base camp of Mt. Everest increased rapidly and with the development of time new trekking routes were formed and Lukla airport was constructed in 1964 AD, this made the Everest Hike less time-consuming and easily accessible to mountain lovers.

So the Everest Base Camp Trek is now only 130 km in terms of distance and takes 11 days of the trek, of which 2 days is for acclimatization making it only 9 days of the trek. This means around 15 km per day of the hike which includes 7 hours of daily hike.

The trek to the Everest Base Camp starts from a moderate hike to strenuous but with frequent breaks and rest for tea/coffee etc making it a relaxing and enjoyable journey to the foothills of the giant Mt. Everest.

Q2. What is the success rate of Everest Base Camp Trek?

Everest Base Camp Trek is an easy hike into the Himalayas with well-maintained trails, beautiful villages, tea houses, lodges, hospitals, ATMs, banks, etc. it is normal hiking at a nominal pace. If we are physically and mentally fit for the 9 days hike then anyone can step into the base camp of Mt. Everest.

In terms of its success rate, 90 percentage of the trekkers step into the Everest Base Camp but we need to follow the same itinerary, skipping some overnight camp to further shorten our trekking distance may lead us to altitude sickness which may result in the downfall of the entire trek.

Q3. Can we trek to the Everest Base Camp individual/single?

There is no problem for any trekkers in hiking to the Everest Base Camp individual/single, as there is no restriction to trek single in the Everest region apart from some of the restricted region of Nepal like Manaslu and Upper Mustang region.

If we can manage permits for trekking to the Everest Base Camp, we can trek alone but some problems may arise while being single trekkers in the high Himalayas of Nepal.

Among them, some are like accommodation while trekking, if we are single trekkers then we may have a problem in finding room in the tea house and lodges because mainly the trekking guides and the travel agencies have direct access to the lodges and tea houses in the trekking route they booked the room before their arrival, so the lodges and tea houses give priority to the agencies and the guide for their business because they are the regular travellers.

Apart from accommodation facilities, during the snowfall the trail from Namche Bazaar is less crowded will almost no villages on the way trekkers may easily mislead them to the wrong trail because of heavy snowfall as the trail will be blocked by the snow.

This may create a problem for the individual trekkers and also if any difficulty arises while in the high altitude there are fewer possibilities of being rescue for individual trekkers.

Q4. Are there a sufficient amount of accommodation facilities in the Everest Base Camp trek?

Everest Base Camp Trek is filled with lodges, tea-house, and some excellent hotels till Namche Bazaar. Now, normally we may find Wi-Fi facilities in many of the lodges/tea houses (if depends upon the weather as well).

Everest Base Camp Trek is all to the Sagarmatha Conservation Area, so there is a restriction on the number of lodges and tea house to be operated and also the tea house and lodges are with a number of limited rooms and basic facilities due to the restriction by the conservation committee but to the lower altitude till Namche Bazaar we can find a sufficient number of lodges and tea house, as we descend uphill the number of tea house and lodges diminish due to high altitude and other problem including harsh weather condition.

Q5. Is there Wi-Fi facilities in the Everest Base Camp Trek?

Everest Base Camp Trek is one of the most popular trekking routes in Nepal, every year thousands of trekkers prefer to trek to the base camp of Everest, due to its popularity the mobile operating company of Nepal mainly NTC and Ncell have installed their network tower in some of the regions with 4G facilities.

Trekkers can buy the Sim card of their desire network to use the internet during the trek with some data packages, but the reliability of the internet facilities also depends upon the weather condition of the mountains. Apart from these, the lodges and tea house also provide Wi-Fi facilities which are payable for day use.

Q6. Can we charge our electronic gadgets in the Everest Base Camp Trek?

Every lodge and tea house in the Everest region have a sufficient amount of electricity facilities, till Namche Bazzar they use a small community hydropower project for electricity but as we climb uphill the lodges and tea house use a solar panel for the supply of electricity, by paying some reasonable amount of money we can charge our mobile, camera and other gadgets.

But we need to may sure there will not be any charging facilities ( charging point) inside the room of the hotel, all the charging point will be at the hotel counter, so we charge our gadgets and pay the money.

Q7. How much does it cost to complete Everest Base Camp Trek?

Everest Base Camp trek is not as expensive as it used to be before the operation of the Lukla airport, now with the operation of the Lukla airport number of days to accomplish the Everest Trek has diminished to just 11 days trek from Lukla to Lukla which is the starting point and the ending point.

But normally we suggest travellers make their stay in Nepal for almost 14 days if their intention is only to trek to Everest Base Camp. This will make you easy for not being hurried for the international flight back home because sometimes due to poor weather condition the flight to and from Lukla to Manthali airport remain close for a day if this happens then we might be required to book a helicopter to or from Lukla which can be arranged on sharing basis with other travellers, in this case, the price may vary with the actual cost.

If we have sufficient time for the Everest Trek then it will cost you around 1500 to 1700 USD which includes all the permits required for the trek, a two-way domestic flight from Manthali to Lukla and vice versa along with the transportation from Kathmandu to Manthali airport and from Manthali airport to Kathmandu along with your guide and porter to assist all the way to the entire trek and also your accommodation and 3-time meals during the trek only and a couple of nights stay in Kathmandu hotel on BB basis ( Bed and Breakfast)

Q8. Can we drink normal water while in the Everest Base Camp Trek?

Water plays a vital role in the trek, now when it comes to Everest Base Camp Trek drinking a sufficient amount of water is very important for any trekkers, it helps to cope up with dehydration and also to help fight altitude sickness. If you are using some medicine for the trek as Diamox to accomplish the trek then we need to make sure the amount to drinking water level must be increased.

Now talking about the drinking water system in the Himalayas, normally local people including guides and porter use normal water to drink from river, stream, tap water, etc but for travellers, we do not suggest to use the normal water, it may cause diarrhoea, stomach problem, etc. to protect yourself from any upcoming problem trekkers can carry water filter with them or water purifying tablets which can be found in medical stores around Kathmandu.

Apart from all this, every tea houses, lodges in the trekking region has the facility of purified drinking water for the travellers, this can be refilled into your personal water bottle but for that, you need to pay extra which varies from the region and also the altitude you are in an average it may cost you from 1 to 3 USD for a litre of purified drinking water in the Himalayas.

Q9. Is it safe to trek Everest Base Camp ?

This is one of the most frequently asked questions by our valuable clients, as per your information, since the time when Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary first summit Mt. Everest in 1953, everything has changed. They were the ones who popularized Mt. Everest (8848.86M) that can be conquered. Since then lots of changes have occurred in the Everest region also known as the Khumbu region.

Now the trail is easy as compared to some decades ago, local people are helping to keep the trail maintained, the government is acting with their budget spending in these areas. Hotels, tea houses, lodges, hospitals, banks, ATM’s, police and army checkpoint has been established to make sure the safety of trekkers goes on accordingly and in time of need and natural disaster.

So, with the development of information and technology now there is access to the telephone and the internet. Thus, we can assure that Everest Base Camp is much better and safe than the 1953’s.

Q10. Is Nepal safe for women to travel?

Nepal is one of the safest countries for any travellers while being in Nepal you can experience this but need some safety as well. What we suggest in Nepal for solo female travel is that while being in Nepal doesn’t try to experience local transportation for a short distance because in short distance travel there is a limited number of public transportation and passengers more and if you have to stand because of overcrowding of passengers, you may feel you are being touched.

Maintain your full sleeve clothes this will be a sign of respect, wear proper clothes even while trekking. Make sure your clothes are not tight enough to expose or give the shape of your body parts, this may cause you trouble in some places (mainly remote areas).

In the city area normally Nepali women wear comfortable clothes as per their requirement but while being away from the city, clothes do matter a lot, in some areas even the local women may not feel comfortable with the exposing clothes travellers wear.

While trekking alone, make sure you are at your destination before it is dark because we say ‘day is yours and night is theirs’. If you follow all these instructions you will certainly feel very safe and comfortable travelling in Nepal.
