Rolwaling valley is famous for mountains with top quality ice in the world in which Pharchamo Peak (also spelled Parcharmo by some) is one of them. Pharchamo peak is 6279 meters peak which is situated just south of the famous Tashi Laptsa pass (5755) in the Rolwaling region.

Pharchamo peak is an attractive straightforward ice-covered peak that offers the best experience of classic ice-climbing mountaineering experience. This peak is listed as one of the trekking peaks which has no crevasses en route to the summit.

it has not any technical difficulty to the summit besides its steepness on some sections, however, the Base camp Approach is comparatively harder than other trekking peaks in Nepal which goes through the remote Tashi Lapcha pass(5755m) which is listed as one of the most difficult passes in Nepal Himalaya.

Being on the summit of Pharchamo you will have a feeling of being in the air with an opening view of the Himalayan panorama in all directions which includes the world’s highest Mount Everest(8848 m), 4th highest mount Lhotse(8516m), 5th highest mount Makalu(8463m) as well as Gaurishanker, Tengi Ragi Tau(6943m), Panayo Tippu (6695m), Pigphe Re Go Shar (6730m) and so many other mountain and beautiful view of Drolumbao glacier.

The adventure begins from Chetchet of Dolakha district after driving about 10 hours from Kathmandu. After this, the trek goes through the Rolwaling valley passing through several local villages such as Simigaun, Kyalche, Beding, and to the last settlement of the valley to Na village from where you hike to the famous glacial lake of Tsho-Rolpa.

Leaving the Na village, the journey enters into the more remote region of Rolwaling in which you have to sleep in the tents as there are no guest houses available. The trail traverses the terminal moraine and eventually goes through the glacier before the heart-pumping climbing over the Tashi Laptsa.

After the Tashi Laptsa, the climbing journey begins descending to its base camp and to the summit on the following day. For the ascent we start picking the way through north-west moraine then to glacial slope stretches as far as the top after this our journey continues descending down to the famous Khumbu region of Everest to Namche bazaar and to Lukla to take a flight back to Kathmandu to end our adventure.

How much does the Pharchamo peak permit costs?

The cost of the Pharchamo peak climb varies depending on the season you pick. Such as if you come in the spring season (March, April, May) it costs $250 USD per person. In autumn (September, October, November) it costs $125 USD per person, and during the winter (December, January, February) and summer season (June, July, August) it only costs $70 USD per person.

Useful Info

what is the best season to climb Pharchamo Peak?

Nepal has two main best seasons for summits mountains which are spring and autumn season. The Spring season which is during the months of March, April, and May is the best time to summit Pharchamo peak as during this time the sky stays clear, predictable weather, warmer temperature, and tiny chances of snowfalls.

Another good season is autumn which is during the months of September, October, and November and during this season as well there are good skis, temperate weather, and fewer chances of snow.

How to Get to the trailhead of Pharchamo peak?

To get to the trailhead of Pharchamo peak there are two main options in which the first one is you can take a drive to Chetchet and from where you can start your trekking through the Rolwaling valley to its base camp which takes about 10 to 12 days. This route provides more acclimatization en route to base camp and so, most people choose it.

Another option is to take a flight to Lukla from where you get to the Pharchamo peak base camp followed by 6 to 7 days via Namche Bazaar and Thame.

Equipment to Bring for Pharchamo Peak

Although it differs on each individual choices and interests. The list of equipment below is a general idea that provides some guidelines for gears to bring during your trek and for climbing.

We advise you to bring sufficient and warm enough clothes fit for much colder weather as mountain weather is always unpredictable and especially for summiting mountains.

Just for a reminder, you can buy all these gears in Kathmandu as well.

Trekking equipment

duffel bag

You need a duffel bag that is supposed to be waterproof with a strap along with a TSA lock. In your duffel bag, you keep all the clothes and essential gear while trekking up to Pharchamo peak base camp which will be carried by our porter. Regarding the size, you can choose from 100 liters to 140 liters duffel as this size all you to fit most of the things you need for trekking.

Sleeping bag

it is the most important piece of equipment for trekking and climbing. Normally the smaller and lighter the size, the more expensive it is. Regarding the warmth of sleeping bags, down sleeping bags are warmer than synthetic ones. you need to bring the sleeping bag that rates up to -20c and a liner just in case it feels colder.

Daypack bag

it's a daypack bag that you carry while waking where you put your wallet, camera, water bottle, rain cover, fleece jacket, and windproof jacket. Regarding the size of the daypack bag, the size of a small-medium 30 to 40-liters day bag with some side pockets where you can fit your water bottle or gloves is good. Moreover, if you can fit your Camelbak in your daily carry it is more efficient in the coldest weather as your water doesn't get freeze.

Water bottle

You can bring two water bottles in which you can drink in one and treat water in another to refill again. (Nalgene water bottle is good as you can put hot water as well if you want) you also can bring Camelbak which can be very handy for climbing.

Upper body

  • Short sleeve synthetic t-shirts*3(while trekking you sweat a lot so, synthetic t-shirts are best to bring as they are light and dry fast)
  • Wind shirts*1
  • Long sleeve Merino wool t-shirts*2
  • Synthetic insulated jacket (you can use it for climbing as well)
  • Fleece glove
  • Insulated gloves

  • Hiking pants*2
  • Fleece trouser
  • Underwear trousers*2
  • Underwear
  • Waterproof paint

Miscellaneous items

  • Items for drinking water treatments such as Steripen, iodine tablets, chlorine liquids, or water filters. (if you using liquids or tablets it might bring a different taste in water so you can bring some juice-powder to bring a nice taste)
  • Fast drying-camp towel (most guesthouses don't provide a towel for a shower so it's good to have one)
  • body wipes (it comes in handy if you don't take shower, especially in higher altitudes where there are no showers)
  • toilet papers
  • Lip balm
  • Sunscreens (minimum of SPF 40 plus as in higher altitude sunlight are direct and more penetrating.
  • Earplugs (it is handy stuff as most guest house rooms are separated by plywood. So, sometimes your next room trekkers might be noisy talkers or snores.
  • Mobile phone (you can use it as an alarm or there are internet services in most of the guesthouses especially in the Everest region so, you can use it if you want to communicate)
  • Diary
  • Chargers with an adapter (you can charge your gadgets along the trail by hydro-powered electricity in the lower region and sun-powered in the higher region)
  • Camera
  • Medical kit (Diamox, Imodium, ibuprofen, throat lozenges, tape, scissor,

A fantastic guide, an amazing Trek

WOW is all I can say about Ace. Udaya was an amazing guide and was perfect throughout the entire trek. He was friendly, super knowledgeable, and handled everything that I needed from gear to travel. They were always concerned about my comfort and seeing that a memorable trip was had by myself and my partner. I had a medical issue that caused him to both works into the night to get a resolution. Of course, being sick in a foreign country can be a scary ordeal, but it was handled professionally and worked out well.

I can say with certainty that they'll be at the top of my list for my next trip and I can say without reservation that I'd go with them again.

Excellent!

I am not an expert on trekking but I love it. From my experience, if you have a plan to trek, the important is you have to find a good guide and travel agency you can trust. I am lucky I found both. So if you have a plan in mind to go to Nepal.. just try to contact them. I believe that you will imprese on their service. 5 trips in Nepal since 2017.. until now I am looking forward to going back to trek with them again 😊
